The Maze (2011)
Interactive light and mirror installation with sensors
Constructed from a sequence of narrow paths, this installation uses optical illusions to manipulate spatial reality.
Mirrors placed at each of its four corners catch a powerful light source at the far end, flattening the winding labyrinth into what appears from the outside to be a gloriously straight tunnel leading to a brilliant exit.
Inside, however, participants discover a cautious, multi-layered journey.
Originally symbolizing the four years spent as a student at the Academy for Performing Arts, these four turns now represent the distinct, winding stages of any life voyage.
As sensors trigger responsive overhead lights according to the traveler’s progress, the piece reveals that reaching the light requires navigating corners we never saw coming.
